In order to make sure that your car is running properly you should change your motor oil every 2,000 miles or 3 months (whichever comes first). In very hot and dusty conditions it should be changed more frequently. Over time your oil breaks down and your filter becomes clogged with contaminants. Anybody can change oil because it is easy and inexpensive. Following the steps below will save you a trip to the local mechanic as well as money.

Step #1: Park the car on a level surface and then open the hood of the car.

Step #2: Crawl under the car and locate the oil drain plug which is usually near the front center of the car.

Step #3: Place the oil pan under the plug and loosen the plug by turning the bolts counter-clockwise with a wrench.

Step #4: Remove the plug and allow the oil to drain completely.

Step #5: Replace the drain plug gasket.

Step #6: Re-install the drain plug.

Step #7: Position the oil pan under the oil filter which is usually located on the side of the engine.

Step #8: Unscrew the old oil filter with the oil filter wrench.

Step #9: Lightly coat the gasket ring of the new filter with new oil.

Step #10: Screw the new filter into place by hand.

Step #11: Remove the oil filler cap on top of the engine.

Step #12: Use a funnel to pour in the new oil (usually 4-5 quarts).

Step # 13: Replace the oil filler cap.

Step #14: Close the hood and clean up.
